Week 2 Story: Squidward Tennisballs

Image
https://sites.google.com/view/nathanielvoportfolio/squidwards-art Squidward Tentacles works unending hours at the Krusty Krab restaurant as a lowly cashier.  He labors day after day to make enough to achieve his dreams: winning a dance competition, playing music at the Bubble Bowl, and being a movie star.  However, his dreams are shattered each and every day as he only makes a nickel for every day he works. Squidward spends his free time as an artist, dancer, and musician.  He enjoys dancing painting and building sculptures of himself, as well as playing his clarinet.  Despite all of his hobbies, Squidward has no friends.  He does not want to associate with his neighbors, SpongeBob and Patrick, as they spend their days blowing bubbles and fishing for jellyfish.  He once had a friend named Howard.  Howard shared many interests with Squidward, such as playing the bassoon, enjoys fine art, and especially dislikes blowing bubbles.  However, SpongeBob and Patrick later convince Howard to

Origin Stories: The Moon     The Man in the Moon :    The blacksmith wasn't satisfied with his life as a blacksmith because it was hot work, so he asked the wise man to be a stone, so he became a stone.  Then he saw that he was then underneath the stone-cutter, so he was made a stone-cutter.  Then the work of a stone-cutter was too much for him, so he asked to be the sun.  But the sun was hotter than all his other forms, so he asked to be the moon instead.  He then asked to be the moon, because it seemed cool.  But the heat from the sun was even greater, so he asked to be a blacksmith again, but the wise man refused to turn him back, and so the blacksmith ended as the moon. Laos Folk-Lore by Katherine Neville Fleeson   The Hare That Was Not Afraid to Die :    Buddha was born as a hare.  He had three friends.  Buddha taught moral law to each of his three friends.  He said to give to the poor.  His three friends then went and got food and thought they were being virtuous.  The h

Storybook Favorites

Don Quixote: A hero? :     The Title of the blog was very clear to indicate that the post was about Don Quixote.  I have heard about Don Quixote, but I've never read too much about it.  Also, I liked in the other posts that they would, at the bottom, step aside from the fictional story and talk about the real story.  I didn't get to read about the actual story and how it parallels with the blog rendition of the story.  I was not much of a fan of the home page for it though.  It lacked a bit of a hook.  The home page should make me want to stop and look onward at it. Peter Pan: Revisited :     I really like the home page for this blog.  It begins by telling us what we already know about Peter Pan.  It gives us a sense of familiarity.  But then it raises the question of the roles being reversed in the Peter Pan story, so the home page gives a nice hook into what's next in the story.  In the story narratives, I really like how the narrative is told from the point of vie

Folklore of the Holy Land: Moslem, Christian, and Jewish:  I come from a Christian background, and I've always been curious about the parallels between the three Abrahamic Religions.  I've always wanted to understand because I see so many rifts between the religions, and I want to understand their differences. Adam and Eve:   Coming from a Christian background, the story of the creation of man is very cut and dry.  So I think it'll be interesting reading about folklore about it, and seeing how it would tie in with my own understandings. King Arthur:   I've always been curious and interested in the stories of King Arthur, but I've never read anything about it since I'm not too much of a reader.  So this would be a good opportunity to read the stories. Time Strategies

I read these two articles: "https://hbr.org/2016/07/how-to-beat-procrastination" and "https://lifehacker.com/four-questions-to-help-you-overcome-procrastination-1784833178". I'd like to start with a few tips that I've given to myself that I should probably start following.  I'm a big procrastinator.  I wait until the last minute to do things.  The first tip in the hbr article says to "Visualize how great it will be to get it done".  I think this tip is actually a really good tip.  It feels very refreshing to finally finish everything up and not to have anything else to worry about.  I think I will put that tip to use for the future.  #4 in the LifeHacker article asks "What Will Go Wrong if I Don’t Do This Now?".  However, a big problem with that tip is that my procrastination has never failed me.  I think what I really need is a shock.  The biggest reason that I procrastinate so much is that procrastination has always worked for me.

Technology

Image
I think that utilizing a large multitude of different technological tools is a good idea.  I don't think that these technological tools will be useful to everyone in the class in the future, but I think it's a good opportunity to introduce the technological tools just in case someone in the class really enjoys using the tool and would perhaps use it for their future.  I feel like I've already been introduced to all of these tools just by being on the internet.  I think that most of the "tools" are already everyday things that I already use, so that should be an easy transition. Computers are one of the biggest modern-day technological advances that reshaped our paradigm of education.

Assignments

Image
I find the assignments a little bit strange.  It differs from other classes in that the other classes will usually have assignments that deal specifically towards its own topic.  However, in this class, it's less a class about mythology and folklore, but more of a class that encourages learning and projects while using mythology and folklore as more of a tool instead of having mythology and folklore as its core goal.  This definitely isn't a bad thing, it's just more of an unusual thing.  One of the biggest tools in this class will be our blogs .

Growth Mindset

I've heard Carol Dweck's Ted Talk in the past at the beginning of my senior year of high school, roughly 2 years ago.  I can't really find myself empathizing with the "Power of Yet" that she speaks of.  Before college, I was always an overachiever that didn't have to struggle to earn good grades in school.  I did very well in high school actually.  However, when I got to college, I found that I didn't have good discipline in my studies and that I struggle with school way harder than I did in high school.  The problem with the "Power of Yet" is that this society of today is SO much more competitive than in the past.  If you don't hustle, then you won't make it.  In her Ted Talk, she says that we as a society focus too hard on the "Power of Now" than the "Power of Yet".  However, we need to use that urgency of not knowing something to drive us to learn it.  For example, let's say that I'm taking a Physics class.

Introduction to a Computer Engineering Student

Image
Hello, my name is Nathaniel Vo.  I am a sophomore Computer Engineering student here at the University of Oklahoma.  One of my favorite things about Computer Engineering is that it is basically 50% Computer Science and 50% Electrical Engineering, so the courses never get too stale.  One of my favorite things to do is to cook food.  I pride myself on cooking low-cost good food.  I am by no means a good cook, I just enjoy doing it in my spare time because I think it's really fun to do, it's a good skill to have, and it lets me express myself to other people.  I love to cook for my peers and loved ones because it displays my love for them.  I really enjoy listening to music in my free time.  I find myself usually mainly listening to Christian music, but whenever I listen to secular music, I listen to indie rock and alternative rock.  I like to play the bass guitar; back in my hometown of Broken Arrow, I played in the worship band for my church.  I really enjoy watching television s

Favorite Place

One of my favorite places in the world is the University of Oklahoma Campus .  I spend most of my time at the campus, and it's a really beautiful campus.  There's a lot of activities to do here.  It's a pretty special place.
