Week 15 Brothers Grimm (Hunt) Reading Notes B

Grimm: Bearskin
Household Tales by Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm
A young man finished war but had nowhere else to go except to his brothers.  He was rejected with only his gun.  He went to go think under a circle of trees.  He heard a strange man with a green coat.  The man promised him wealth if he were to be found fearless.  The man told him to fire at a bear.  The strange man then told him that if he were to wear the bearskin for seven years without cleaning himself, he would have money in his pocket.  But if he died within the seven years, the man, actually the devil, would claim him.  He agreed to those conditions.  Within the first four years, it was easy to get shelter through the money, however after, he could not get shelter anymore from the inn.  He then gave money to the innkeeper who was having financial issues. The innkeeper was gratified and allowed him to marry one of his daughters.  The two older daughters fled, while the youngest daughter kept her father's promise.  He gave her a matching ring, and he decided to wander for 3 more years.  At the end of the seven years, he went back to the circle of trees.  He forced the devil to clean him and he was made very handsome.  He went to the innkeeper unrecognized and was promised the daughters again.  He chose the youngest, who was upset that "Bearskin" was still wandering.  However, he showed her his matching ring and she realized that he was her bridegroom.  They got married, and the two other sisters killed themselves.  The devil came by and stated that he now had two souls in his place.

Grimm: Hans the Hedgehog
Household Tales by Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm
There was an extremely wealthy countryman who had no children but wanted children.  He said it could even be a hedgehog.  His wife then birthed a half-hedgehog child.  They named him Hans.  When he was to be christened, he could not due to his spikes.  Eight years later, there was a fair.  The father brought back meat and white rolls for the wife and bagpipes requested by Hans.  Hans decided to wander and watched livestock.  A king came by and lost his way but he heard Hans' bagpipes.  Hans came down to help the King on the premise that the king signs over whatever first comes to meet him in the royal court.  Hans then showed him the way.  The King came home to his daughter and told her about Hans. The daughter did not want to be with Hans.  The King tricked Hans and didn't write that he could have his daughter.  Once again, another King passed by Hans again watching livestock and was lost again.  The King promised the same thing as the other again to Hans to show him the way.  The King came home to his only daughter and told her the details.  She said that she would be with Hans if she had to.  Hans was very successful in his livestock and they multiplied.  He decided to go home.  He rode to the first King and threatened to kill the King and daughter, so the King gave his daughter to Hans.  When they rode away, she was pierced by Hans' spikes and she was disgraced.  Hans went to the second King.  The daughter was terrified but welcomed him.  He takes off his hedgehog skin and has the guards throw it in a fire.  Hans was cleaned and became handsome.  Hans received the kingdom from the King.  Hans went home to retrieve his father, and they lived in the Kingdom together.

Grimm: Snow-White and Rose-Red
There was a poor widow who had 2 children, snow-white and rose-red. Snow-White was more reserved while Rose-Red was outgoing and energetic.  They lived very peacefully together.  One day, rose-red finds a bear at the door.  She feared the bear, but the bear said that he only wanted to warm himself.  The mother allowed the bear to warm up.  The children cleaned and had fun with the bear.
The bear left at dawn but came back every evening.  The bear one day said that he had to go away for a while to guard his treasures from wicked dwarfs. One day, when the children were getting firewood, they found a dwarf.  They tried to help the dwarf, who was being very rude, but they were not strong enough.  They rescue him by cutting his beard off, and he responded by being ungrateful.  Later on, the children went to catch fish and they found the same dwarf again.  They save him but he is ungrateful again.  It then happened again afterward.  One day, they meet the dwarf and bear again.  The dwarf begs the bear to eat the girls instead, but the bear kills him.  The bear then turns into a prince after breaking free for the dwarf's curse.  Snow-White married the prince, while Rose-Red married the prince's brother.  They shared the treasure in the dwarf's cave.  The mother lived happily with her children afterward.
